The Alpine Stitch: Crochet Along (with video)

Growing in popularity, this is a great stitch to work a blanket, scarf, or even a hat. The texture really shows in this easy pattern. The light hits it and the shadows cast an elegant glow. You will love this pattern! Check out the video at the bottom of this post for a crochet along tutorial!

Pattern:

ABBREVIATIONS:

CHAIN (ch)

SINGLE CROCHET (sc)

DOUBLE CROCHET (dc)

FRONT POST DOUBLE CROCHET (FPdc)

REPEAT (rep)

YARN OVER (yo)

Ch in multiples of 2 plus one.

FOUNDATION ROW: In the 2nd ch from the hook, work one sc; rep working sc in the row. ch 2. Turn.

Row 1: (The ch-2 acts as the first dc); in the second stitch and in each stitch across, work one dc. ch 1, turn.

Row 2: (The ch-1 acts as first sc); in the second stitch and in each stitch across, work one sc. Ch 2, turn.

ALPINE STITCH ROWS

Row 1: In the 2nd stitch, work one dc. In the next stitch, (see video for visual) * work a FPdc around the dc from Row 1 (two rows below this row). (FPdch = YO, insert hook around the dc, yo, pull up a large loop, yo, draw through two loops, yo, draw through two loops); in the next stitch on current row, work a dc. Work from * to the end of the row. In the last stitch, work a normal dc. Ch 1 turn.

Row 2: in the 2nd stitch and in each stitch across, work one sc. Ch 2, turn.

Row 3: * work an FPdc around the normal dc from Row 1 (of the Alpine Stitch Rows), in the next stitch work one dc. Rep from * to the end of the row. In the last stitch, work one normal dc. ch 1. Turn.

Row 4: in the 2nd stitch and in each stitch across, work one sc. Ch 2, turn.

Row 5: In the 2nd stitch, work one normal dc. * In the next stitch, work one FPdc, in the next stitch, work one normal dc. Rep from * to the end of the row. In the last stitch, work one normal dc. Ch 1. Turn.

Rep Rows 2 - 5 to continue pattern.
